CNN Student news 21/12/2012 [VIDEO]

Bản tin CNN Student news ngày 21/12/2012.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED STUDENTS: Hi, we`re the eighth grade class of St. Gabriel`s Soul in Midford, Pennsylvania, happy to introduce the best CNN STUDENT NEWS broadcaster -- a curtain call for Carl Azuz.

Take it away, Carl.

CARL AZUZ, HOST: That looked great and I most certainly will.

Thank you to the students at St. Gabriel`s for that introduction.
I am Carl Azuz.
CNN STUDENT NEWS is kicking off a new week of headlines on this Monday, May 21st.

First up, President Obama is wrapping up four days of meetings with other world leaders. It started last Friday with the annual two day gathering of the G-8. This is a group of eight powerful countries that gets together every year to discuss global issues. Its members are the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia and Canada.

President Obama hosted this year`s meeting at the presidential country residence. That`s Camp David. The leaders talked about food issues in Africa, political issues in the Middle East and Iran`s controversial nuclear program.

But the main focus of this meeting was on the global economy, specifically on the financial struggles happening around Europe.

Brianna Keilar has more.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BRIANNA KEILAR, CNN CONGRESSIONAL CORRESPONDENT: As the Eurozone crisis enters its third year, we saw a shift at this G-8 Summit toward a strategy that President Obama has been advocating for some time, focusing not only on government spending cuts, on budget cuts, but also on economic growth and creating jobs, something that has eluded many Eurozone nations for some time now.

And President Obama has an eye very much on the crisis there during this election year, as it threatens to affect the fragile economic recovery here in the U.S.

AZUZ: After the G-8 summit, the U.S. president headed to Chicago for a NATO meeting that started yesterday and runs through today. The leaders of more than 50 countries are at this conference, which is primarily about the war in Afghanistan.

At this meeting, the leaders are expected to work on a plan for how security in Afghanistan will shift from NATO forces to Afghan troops. They`re mapping out the time frame and looking at who will pay for the increased number of Afghan troops it will take to secure the country.

While the NATO members are working on that inside, more protesters have been gathering outside the conference and five men have been arrested in connection with an alleged terror plot in Chicago. Police say there are no imminent threats to the world leaders at the NATO meeting.

Chen Guangcheng is a Chinese human rights activist, but he`s not in China anymore. On Saturday, Chen, his wife and his two children arrived in the United States.

Now, you might remember this name from reports we gave you last month, when Chen took shelter at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing after he escaped from house arrest.

That caused some tension between the United States and China.

Richard Roth was in New York when Chen Guangcheng arrived there Saturday night.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

RICHARD ROTH, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Chen arrived here, at New York University, in Washington Square Village, his new home now. He came here by van from Newark Airport in neighboring New Jersey.

(voice-over): Chen was escorted from the van and approached the microphones to cheers of onlookers, who screamed, "Welcome to the USA!"

He`s been through a lot and he was grateful.

CHEN GUANGCHENG, CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST (through translator): After much turbulence, I have come out of Shandong. This is thanks to the assistance of many friends.

ROTH: He thanked the U.S. Embassy. He thanked the Chinese government for calm and restraint in handling the matter. But he is very worried about relatives back home and he, three times, made the point that the Chinese government should live up to its promises to respect the lives of his family members.

GUANGCHENG: As we see acts of retribution in Shandong may not have been abated, my rights to practice law have been curbed and we hope to see, in the future, a thorough investigation into these events.

ROTH: This human rights activist, who escaped house arrest by scaling a wall and seeking refuge in the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, now wants everyone to try to get along.

GUANGCHENG: I believe that no matter how difficult the environment, nothing is impossible, as long as you put your heart to it.

ROTH (on camera): Chen is going to be a fellow studying here with the law department at New York University. It`s likely there will be interviews in the days ahead and he`s going to stay concerned about family back at home -- an end, for now, of what was a huge diplomatic affair.

Richard Roth, CNN, New York.

(END VIDEO TAPE)

AZUZ: We told you earlier that Italy is part of the G-8. The country`s prime minister, Mario Monti, was also at the NATO meeting in Chicago. But he headed home early, after an earthquake hit Italy on -- early on Sunday morning.

The quake had a magnitude of 6.0. It struck around 4:00 a.m. local time on Sunday. At least seven people were killed. There were 50 others who were injured and a large number of people were forced out of their homes by the damage, you can see in these pictures.

Rescue workers are digging through the rubble in hopes of finding survivors. They`ll also be making their way out to search smaller, more remote villages. Prime Minister Monti promised to help victims, saying, quote, "All that is necessary will be done as soon as possible."

What you`re looking at here is a mountain in Switzerland. But pay attention, because this thing is about to look very different.

Watch this -- trees just collapsing. Over the course of several hours, more than 10 million cubic feet of rock slid down the mountainside and into the valley below. Officials evacuated the area to avoid any potential injuries from this landslide. Scientists said the cliff was stable afterward, but it was still classified as a danger zone.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Is this Legit?

The bugle song, "Taps," is played at the end of the day on U.S. military bases.

True. You`ve probably also heard it played in connection with military funerals.

AZUZ: "Taps" isn`t a complicated song, just 24 notes total. The melody was written by a U.S. Civil War general who didn`t like the old "Lights Out" bugle call.

He wrote "Taps" 150 years ago. And in order to commemorate that anniversary, nearly 200 buglers and trumpeters gathered at Arlington National Cemetery over the weekend.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

(music)

RICH PAULING, BUGLER: Well, this is part of the 150th anniversary of "Taps." And we`re one of over 200 buglers that have been invited here today to give the playing of bugles all over Arlington Cemetery -- National Cemetery, I should add.

If this doesn`t make you proud to be an American, I don`t know what`s wrong with you.

(music)

ALLISON CUMMINGS, BUGLER: It`s just such an honor to play that for them. It`s for the family, as well. But I think of it as playing to that person just a final thank you for what they did.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

AZUZ: Well, CNNStudentNews.com is our home page. You know that address, all the great stuff you can find there. We want you to make us your home page.

Our daily show is going on break in just a few weeks, but we are going to be updating our site throughout the summer with new posts from our blogs From A to Z and Schools of Thought. You can keep up with us. Keep up with everything we`ve got going on by making us your home page today.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Today`s Shoutout goes out to Miss. Borman`s classes at Washington Middle School in Evansville, Indiana.

What does the prefix amphi- mean?

You know what to do.

Does it mean loud, both, water or split?

You`ve got three seconds.

Go.

Amphi means both, like an amphibian, which can live both on land and in water. That`s your answer and that`s your Shoutout.

AZUZ: Today`s Before We Go report is about something that`s amphibious, but we`re not talking about a frog. This is a car. And it is fast. It looks fast. On land, this thing goes up to 180 miles per hour. And after you take it for a spin, you can take it for a swim. Top speed in the water, a little over 60, which is pretty fast for that.

It`s called the Sea Lion and it took an engineer six years to design and build it. This kind of thrill ride doesn`t come cheap. In fact, you might not believe me if I told you how much it costs. It`s nearly 260,000 bucks.

No lying, see?

Now, hopefully, there are some interested buyers who will spend that much. Otherwise, I gas this amphibious car idea might just be washed up.

It`s time for us to hit the road after treading over a few puns.

For CNN STUDENT NEWS, I`m Carl Azuz.

And we will look forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

English story: Santa's Christmas

Santa's Christmas (by Lavina Tien).

It was a beautiful December day, with clear blues sky, and snow-covered treetops. Christmas was in the air! but up in Santa' lodge, all was quiet. The usual hustle and bustle of preparing christmast presents was missing. For Santa has fallen ill.
 - oh dear! what will the children say when they don't recieve presents this year. (Santa wondered sadly, as he lay in his bed)
Suddenly, he heard a noise from outside. He looked out of the window and saw his for reindeer standing patiently as usual. But the seemed quite out of breath as if they has just finished the long trip. And as Santa took a closer look, he could not believe what he saw. For, behind the reindeer was a long train of  sleds, carrying little children dressed in all sorts of colours. One by one, they hoped out onto the snow. And headed toward Santa's lodge. Soon came and knock on the door.
- Come in. (Santa called out, for he was extremely curious)
Incame a little girl, hugging something soft in her arms.
- i heard that you were sick, Mr Santa (she began). So i'm giving you my teddy bear., to keep you company. "
- why, thank you, little Emma! (said Santa) for he knew everychild by name.
Then entered a young boy with a red package in his arms
- we knew that you were ill,  Pappa Santa (he said). So my family knitted this quilt for you, to keep you warm in the winter dáy.
- why, what a wonderful thought, Paul! (beamed Santa patting him on the head)
And one by one the children came in through Santa's door, each with a special gift to wish Santa well.
There were cookies, pies, socks, mittens, books, jigsaw Puzzels and even small christmas tree. -Christmas delivered to my doorstep! (exclaimed Santa) Come, let us all share these wonderful gifts
And he gathered the childredn around him in a big circle.
- Santa, which present do like best? (Emma soon piped up)
- My dear little ones, (Santa replied, smiling). It is the love and kindness that each of you has shown me today. that is the best present of all.
He looke fondly at all eager faces around him.
- this's my little ones, is the true meaning of Christmas.
and with that,Santa gave each of the children a big, warm holiday hug.

CNN Student New 20/12/2012

CARL AZUZ, CNN ANCHOR: When people think of movies, they think Hollywood. But more and more of these films are being produced somewhere else, and the reason why is coming up in our penultimate program of 2012.

Starting on the subject of Libya, for months people have been asking questions about an attack on the U.S. Government facility in Libya, how did it happen, could it have been prevented. A review of that attack is offering some answers. On September 11th of this year, the U.S. Consulate building in Benghazi, Libya came under attack. Four Americans were killed including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya. This report says part of the blame falls on the U.S. State Department, which is in charge of U.S. Facilities in other countries. The report says, failures at the State Department led to a security plan "that was inadequate for Benghazi and grossly inadequate to deal with the attack. Three State Department officials resigned, they quit after this review came out, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says she accepts the recommendations that were made by the board that did this review. Those include strengthening security and improving fire safety precautions in potentially dangerous areas.

From Northern Africa, we are going to head east to South Korea, for a story about that country`s next leader. South Koreans voted in their nation`s presidential election yesterday. The winner won`t officially take office until February. When that happens, it`ll come with a bit of history. This is Park Geun-hye. She is said to be the next South Korean president, she`ll be the first woman ever to hold that title. Officials still have to confirm the election results, but Park was leading with more than 94 percent of the vote counted. The economy was the number one issue in South Korea`s election, just like it was for many American voters, and in other countries that held elections this year. Park described her win as "a victory for people who want to overcome crisis and revive the economy."

Following last week`s tragic shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, a lot of people are talking about the issue of gun control. Yesterday, President Obama announced that Vice President Joe Biden will lead a group with representatives from different organizations. Their job is to come up with recommendations to address wide-spread gun violence. The president said he wants those recommendations no later than January. When something like this school shooting happens, it`s natural to have concerns, to have questions. You might have heard of Dr. Drew Pinsky, you`ve seen him on TV. He hosts a show on HLN. He is a medical doctor, and he`s got a lot of experience helping people work through sensitive subjects. We asked Dr. Drew some questions recently about dealing with this kind of tragedy.

DR. DREW PINSKY, HOST HLN`S "DR. DREW ON CALL": Well, listen around this country many young people, particularly of high school age, already were very concerned about random acts of violence. So, their level of anxiety, I`m certain, has been heightened. But in general, this is, of course, normal. People are going to feel anxious, people are going to be looking over their shoulder. Remember, this is a very rare event. It really is - though there can be copycats, it`s not likely to happen again. And the fact, is, you can do something active in your own community. You can form communal efforts, you can gather together and discuss these things. As with everything else, taking action now can make you feel empowered and reduce some of your anxiety.

Feeling safe at school, obviously, talk to your teachers, talk to your administration, to make sure that they have safeguards in place, that everyone agrees is sufficient for realistically people to feel safe, and I`m sure your school has that, but again, I`m going to state something that I said earlier, which is making a community effort, building a community that feels safe to everyone. And if there are outliers, there are people that make you feel uncomfortable, see something, report it. And make sure that everybody carries that same understanding. And what to look out for, if people are talking about violence, or hurting themselves or somebody else or don`t seem properly attuned or connected to reality, or you are just concerned about them, it feels uncomfortable, you see something, you report it, and the entire community agrees they`ll do the same.

Now, if you have a younger sibling who is anxious and worried about something horrible happening, remember depending on the age of the child how they process these things could be very, very different than, say, high school age or junior high school age individuals. So don`t insist that your sibling talk about it the same way or the way you would understand it. The advice to you is the same as I was giving you to help yourself, which is be there, just be present. Help your younger siblings give words to their sorrow, give words to their trauma, but don`t insist that those words necessarily even make sense to you. And your job is not to fix their feelings, but just to be there. Back to you, Carl.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Today`s "Shoutout" goes out to Mr. Taylor`s social studies classes at Red Jacket High School in Shortsville, New York.

Now, where would you find a gaffer, key grip and best boy? Here we go: are they on a rugby team, sailboat, movie set or political campaign? You`ve got three seconds, go!

Key grip, gaffer and best boy are all jobs on a movie set, that`s your answer and that`s your "Shoutout."

(END VIDEO CLIP)

AZUZ: Those sets are all over the country, "Catching Fire," the next "Hunger Games" movie, part of that was filmed right here in Atlanta, Georgia. "X-men First Class," "The Last Song", "Vampire Diaries," "Drop Dead Diva," they are all produced around Georgia. George Howell looks at why some productions are heading away from Hollywood and what that can mean for California and the states where these productions end up.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GEORGE HOWELL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: When it came to the filming of this movie, starring John Travolta and Robert De Niro, producer John Thompson had a choice to make, and Hollywood wasn`t the answer.

JOHN THOMPSON, FILM PRODUCER: We found that Atlanta offered a very deep and experienced crew base, and we had to bring very, very few people to the Atlanta area to build our crew.

HOWELL: Thompson isn`t the first producer to pack up and head east. A recent study shows that Los Angeles County lost more than 16,100 movie- related jobs between 2004 and 2011. Jobs that were lured away by states like Louisiana, New York, North Carolina and Georgia, where filmmakers get big tax breaks. The tax incentive for filming in Georgia can be as much as 30 percent. 40 years later, the state now boasts of generating some $3.1 billion in film related revenues in 2012 alone. A booming industry that attracted studios like EUE/Screen Gems to Atlanta, setting the stage with infrastructure to support even more film production.

(on camera): How big is the stage?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So, this stage is stage six, it`s 30,000 square feet, it`s 40 feet tall and no columns, 150 by 200 feet, and that`s the key, it`s the combination of the height and the fact that there is no columns, so you can build entire houses in here. Now think about it: you could build three 10,000 foot houses in here. Just on the floor level.

HOWELL (voice over): As other states benefit from California`s loss, legislators there recently voted to extend tax incentives to filmmakers for two additional years, a move to stop the flight of films elsewhere as industry leaders in L.A. look for solutions. George Howell, CNN, Atlanta.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

AZUZ: It is the season of giving, and in that spirit we asked you to send an "I-Reports" telling us how you are giving back. We`ve got some great responses and we are going to share some of them right now.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CARTER WILLIAMS, STUDENT: We are from Mr. Sam`s class in Charlotte, North Carolina.

STEPHANIE VAUGHN, STUDENT: What we are doing to celebrate the season of giving this year ...

WILLIAMS: Is by participating in Operation Christmas Child.

VAUGHN: Operation Christmas Child is an organization where you pack boxes for boys and girls between ages of four and 14, and they are sent out to different countries in the world.

LUKE ALLCOCK, STUDENT: This year for Christmas, I`m actually taking pictures since I am a photographer for a thing called Operation Christmas Child. And basically, I am just going to take pictures of everything that`s going on there, and at the very, very end, they are going to put it all together in a slide show, and they`re going to show it to everyone, so they can see how much of a great time we had.

KRISEN GOUGH, STUDENT: And I help by donating clothing and new toys to an organization called (inaudible), who gives it to people that can`t afford things.

SARAH ELL, STUDENT: This year, I`m getting Christmas list from another family and buying their presents.

BEN LOWE, STUDENT: Every year for Christmas, I stay up a little late on Christmas Eve baking and making brownies and cookies, and then on Christmas morning I go down to the homeless shelter and I give them to the homeless people.

HANNAH SCOTT, STUDENT: I donated money to Africa to help send a doctor, to give Bibles, and to help feed a baby.

KAYLA KESSEL, STUDENT: I am knitting a scarf and I`m donating it to Share the Warmth today.

CEDRIC KOMSA, STUDENT: What I do to give back during the holidays is donate toys to my local homeless shelter in Charlotte.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

AZUZ: Excellent work, y`all. We are going to regift that segment, present more of your "I-Reports" tomorrow. For today, though, that`s a wrap. Have a great day.

"keel overto suddenly fall to the ground, because you are ill or suffering from shock [phr v I]
She'd been complaining of a headache all morning, and suddenly she just keeled over | As the jury announced its verdict, the defendant turned pale and keeled over onto the courtroom floor"

The man seated himself again, and said, without raising his voice, "I am at an inn,I am hungry, and I shall remain."
"Even though I am hungry, I don't want to eat anything."
    Hey, I am hungry, dad.
And my answer was very simple. I would have tried to draw a little attention to myself. I would have said I am hungry that I am dying, I am cold, I am in pain, or something, but she gave me much more-she gave me her grateful love

  •       code:      http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ljt0togjjno

        code:         http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?jn1jmywan3m

    Smiley face  Smiley face

  • Smiley face

    • Chuyển sang thẻ Speech, phần Nature voice english chọn Lingoes English, chọn Enable, rồi click chuột vào Rebuild index file
    • Phần Text to speech, chọn Lee_Australian_English_Male.. , như hình sau

    Smiley face

    CNN Student News- 19/12/1012 [Video]

CARL AZUZ, CNN ANCHOR: I`m Carl Azuz. Today, on CNN STUDENT NEWS we begin by continuing our coverage of the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. And we are looking at the way to help those affected by this tragedy begin to heal.

A healing process will be a long one for many people in Newtown. But slowly, some of the first signs of normalcy are returning. Students started going back to school yesterday. Teacher groups said the classes would discuss the shooting in age-appropriate ways trying to help students make sense of it. Class was not back in session of the students and teachers of Sandy Hook Elementary. They won`t go back until January, and when they do, they`ll be at a different building about eight miles away. On Monday, we covered the shooting in depth. You can find that show on our home page or at the CNN schools of thought blog. Teachers, that`s also where you`ll find the post that shares some tools to help discuss the story with your students. Gary Tuchman now looks at how some specially trained animals are taking part of the healing process.

    (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Nine golden retrievers on the march making their way into a recreation center in Newtown, Connecticut for an emotional rescue to help comfort the children who survived the attack at Sandy Hook Elementary and other children in town. Therapeutic canines were sponsored and trained by Lutheran Church Charities transported in a van for a 900 mile ride from Illinois.

(on camera): And what is a comfort dog?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A comfort dog is one who brings comfort to other people when they are suffering or hurting or bring happiness to people, it helps people process the grief they ...

TUCHMAN: So they are specially trained?

TIM HETZNER, LUTHERAN CHURCH CHARITIES: They are specially trained. These are all trained service dogs. So we don`t use them with disabled, but we use that training, and then we train them additionally to work with all different age groups and people.

To some people, and we`ve seen this with children, it brings a sense of calmness in the time of confusion for them during this period. To some, it helps them process their grief, so they are crying, and they hug the dog and to some children now come up, and they walk away happy.

Do you know that Luther is incapable of being mean? Luther is a friendly dog.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, Katon loves dogs.

TUCHMAN: When does training begin to be a comfort dog?

HETZNER: Five and a half weeks, we buy puppies at five and a half weeks and turn them upside down in how their temperament is and from that point on, we ...

TUCHMAN: But you turn them upside down, so if they are turned upside down and they flail, they can`t be a comfort dog.

HETZNER: Right. Our initial screening is if they can be relaxed in that position, then we start the next process, which is a trainer that works with them one on one for the next eight months to a year.

    (END VIDEOTAPE)

AZUZ: We`ve been asking on our blog, what you think can be done to keep kids safer at school. Amira says, "Schools should have more security guards with better training and more available defense resources for the trained security personnel." Ian suggests, "Limiting access points for perpetrators and educating students on what needs to be done in case the worst happens." From Kal, campuses could be surrounded by fences that can be climbed as easily as chain-linked fences.

Jack thinks the best course of action is to have at least to or more staff in a school with guns to protect themselves and the kids.

John writes, "The only reasonable solution is to have stricter gun control: not a single American needs an automatic weapon unless it`s government issued." Macey says, "Too many people have guns and use them for the wrong reason." In Nick`s opinion, a change in gun laws wouldn`t solve the problem: "We need to focus on mental instabilities in children." Heather also says, "We need more attention brought to mental health care to prevent things like this from happening. CNN is looking for your "I- Reports." If your class or school is taking action to honor Newtown, Connecticut, head to ireport.com and upload your photos in our Newtown assignment.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Is this legit? There are mountains on the Moon. Yes, the Moon has mountains, craters, even seas, although scientists don`t think there`s water in them.

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

AZUZ: One of these mountains is named for Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, and on Monday, that spot was the final stop for a pair of probes, a pair of spacecraft that have been checking out the Moon. Ebb and Flow were about the size of a washer and dryer, before they crashed landing into that mountain, their mission was to orbit the Moon and map it out. Scientists were hoping to learn more about its surface and how it might have formed. Researchers say they got a lot of great information from Ebb and Flow. They think it could take years to analyze all of it. NASA officials say the twin probes were intentionally sent into that mountain on Monday because they didn`t have enough fuel or altitude to keep going with the mission.

The group of men you are seeing here are part of a TV crew for NBC. One of them is Richard Engel, the network`s chief foreign correspondent. The crew was kidnapped by masked armed men when it crossed the border into Syria to report on that country`s civil war. During the five days they were held, Engel said the crew was blindfolded and repeatedly threatened. They were eventually freed and taken out of Syria on Tuesday. And it`s been difficult for journalists to report on Syria`s civil war, because the Syrian government has severely limited their access inside the country. When journalists do choose to report from inside Syria, they are potentially putting themselves in harm`s way.

    (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Today`s "Shoutout" goes out to Mr. Linser`s classes at Bellevue High School in Bellevue Washington. Which of these ancient civilizations leave in what`s now North and Central America? Here we go, was it the Sumarians, Phoenicians, Maya or Vikings? You`ve got three seconds, go!

They Maya lives in parts of what are now Belize, Guatemala and Mexico. That`s your answer and that`s your "Shoutout."

    (END VIDEO CLIP)

AZUZ: You might have studies the Maya in your history classes, you might have even discussed them outside of school, there is this rumor that`s been going around about the end of the world. Now, the theory says that could happen later on this week, because that is when the Mayan calendar ends, but Nick Parker caught up with some modern day Maya about the reality.

    (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

NICK PARKER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Lario Kancha (ph) is a priest, his people`s calendar ends in a matter of days.

"It`s considered the closure of the great cycle of Mayan time," he says. But, of course, the next cycle begins the following day. For the Mayans, it`s not the end of the world.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We can`t get to the airport.

PARKER: Doomsday scenes from movies like "2012" have helped create a different myth. So, where does it come from? The Mayan civilization began in several countries from around 2,000 B.C. The story behind the infamous date begins in ancient sites like Chichen Itza where Mayans created calendars.

ALFREDO BARRERA, MEXIAN GOVERNMENT ARCHEOLOGIST: The Mayas were astronomers, when they go into the tower in the upper part, they can make observations, they relate the astronomic records with the agriculture, with the economy.

PARKER: Temples are designed to channel sunlight, and the number of panels correspond to years.

When academics translated inscriptions in the 19th century, they discovered that Mayans counted 394 years cycles, known as baktuns and many say the significant 14th baktun expires this Winter Solstice, December, the 21st. Others say, it actually ends on the 23rd.

This carving made in 700 A.D. Ignited furious debate. Monument Six, as it`s known, was discovered at the site of Tortuguero and predicts a major event at the end of this 13th baktun.

BARRERA: We don`t have prophecy or inscriptions related with the finish of the world or prophecies, it`s only a mention of a data, but it doesn`t mention more about, because description is not complete.

PARKER: He blames online speculation and ignorant writing for the Doomsday belief. But the data is certainly open to interpretation. Santiago Pando lives outside Mexico City and is a filmmaker.

"There is a big sun, which is going to align with the other suns in others galaxies," he says. "This means, there will be an enormous quantity of light, and this will give us a wider view of reality."

Many in Mayan countries will mark the day as a celebration, as others around the word fear something more sinister. Nick Parker, CNN, Yucatan, Mexico.

    (END VIDEOTAPE)

AZUZ: Some superstitious folks might think it`s bad luck to let a black cat cross their path, but the students at this crosswalk probably disagree with that, because this black cat seems to be all about safety. It`s name is Sable, he is 15 years old, his owner says he makes it part of his daily routine to heat the street right before the bell rings. The crossing guards think of him as part of a team, he even has his own safety vest, and he doesn`t charge for his services.

And maybe one day he`ll call the tab he`s been running. For now, he just seems to have a vested interest in keeping the street safe for the kitties. That`s all the time we have for today. We will hope to cross paths again tomorrow when CNN STUDENT NEWS returns. Bye now.
